The True Nature of Magic

This is from the cover of "Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind. It is the first book in a very remarkable fantasy series called "The Sword of Truth".

The characters dispalyed in the picture are as follows: Kahlan Amnell in the lower left (she is a powerful authority figure as well as a magic creature called a Confessor), Richard Rahl (formerly Cypher; a wizard, the Seeker of Truth, and lord of D'Hara), Scarlet (the dragon), and Zeddicus Z'ul Zorander in the lower right (Richard's grandfather and a powerful wizard of the First Order). To understand what any of these terms mean you will have to read the book (s).
